Acts in different tissues through interaction to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Isoform 2 modulates functional properties of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) to prevent excessive excitation, and hence neurodegeneration. Enhances desensitization by increasing both the rate and extent of desensitization of alpha(4)beta(2) nAChRs and slowing recovery from desensitization. Promotes large amplitude ACh-evoked currents through alpha(4)beta(2) nAChRs. Prevents plasticity in the primary visual cortex late in life. In keratinocytes, isoform 3 delays differentiation and prevents apoptosis (By similarity). {ECO:0000250}.

Tissue Specificity

Isoform 2 is expressed in neurons of multiple regions in the CNS, including the cerebral cortex, thalamus, substantia nigra, cerebellum, amygdala and hippocampus. Also expressed in kidney, heart and thymus, but at lower levels than in the brain. Expressed in the primary visual cortex (V1) and the lateral geniculate nucleus (at protein level).
