Function Force generating protein of respiratory cilia. Produces force towards the minus ends of microtubules. Dynein has ATPase activity; the force-producing power stroke is thought to occur on release of ADP. Required for structural and functional integrity of the cilia of ependymal cells lining the brain ventricles. {ECO:0000269PubMed:15269178}.
Subcellular Localization Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, cilium axoneme.
Disease Associations Note=Defects in Dnah5 are the cause of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). PCD is characterized by recurrent respiratory infections, situs inversus and ciliary immotility and hydrocephalus. {ECO:0000269PubMed:11912187}.
Tissue Specificity Strongly expressed in lung and kidney and weaker expression seen in brain, heart and testis. In the brain, expressed in ependymal cells lining the brain ventricles and the aqueduct. {ECO:0000269PubMed:11788826, ECO:0000269PubMed:15269178}.
