Summary
Stat4 is required for the generation of an effective innate host defense against bacterial pathogens of the lung.
Ity14 (Immunity to Typhimurium locus 14) mice with a mutation in Stat4 have an increased innate susceptibility following sublethal invasive S. Typhimurium challenge.

Summary
[Homo sapiens] STAT4 is a transcription factor that mediates IL12 cytokine signalling, and as a member of the STAT protein family, STAT4 have significant impact on innate immunity during sepsis.
[Homo sapiens] STAT4 relies on the phosphorylation of it's N-domains to form STAT4 tetramer in response to cytokine-induced activation.
Entrez Gene
Summary This gene does not have any Entrez summary - the following is the summary from its human ortholog ENSG00000138378:
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT family members are phosphorylated by the receptor associated kinases, and then form homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the cell nucleus where they act as transcription activators. This protein is essential for mediating responses to IL12 in lymphocytes, and regulating the differentiation of T helper cells. Mutations in this gene may be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants that encode the same protein.
