Last Modified 2014-10-13 [Report errors or provide feedback]
Gene Symbol SLC1A3
Protein Name solute carrier family 1 (glial high affinity glutamate transporter), member 3
Synonyms EA6; EAAT1; GLAST; GLAST1;
Species Homo sapiens
Ensembl Protein ENSP00000265113
InnateDB Gene IDBG-16618 (SLC1A3)
Protein Structure
UniProt Annotation
Function Transports L-glutamate and also L- and D-aspartate. Essential for terminating the postsynaptic action of glutamate by rapidly removing released glutamate from the synaptic cleft. Acts as a symport by cotransporting sodium.
Subcellular Localization Membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Disease Associations Episodic ataxia 6 (EA6) [MIM:612656]: A disorder characterized by episodic ataxia, seizures, migraine and alternating hemiplegia. {ECO:0000269PubMed:16116111}. Note=The disease is caused by mutations affecting the gene represented in this entry.
Tissue Specificity Highly expressed in cerebellum, but also found in frontal cortex, hippocampus and basal ganglia.
