Protein Structure
UniProt Annotation
Function Voltage-gated calcium channel that plays a central role in sperm cell hyperactivation. Controls calcium entry to mediate the hyperactivated motility, a step needed for sperm motility which is essential late in the preparation of sperm for fertilization. Activated by intracellular alkalinization. Contrary to the human ortholog, not activated by progesterone. {ECO:0000269PubMed:14657366, ECO:0000269PubMed:16036917, ECO:0000269PubMed:17174296}.
Subcellular Localization Cell projection, cilium, flagellum membrane {ECO:0000269PubMed:11675491}; Multi-pass membrane protein {ECO:0000269PubMed:11675491}. Note=Specifically located in the principal piece of sperm tail.
Disease Associations
Tissue Specificity Testis-specific. {ECO:0000269PubMed:11675491}.
