InnateDB Gene IDBG-198227 (Rab38)
Protein Structure
UniProt Annotation
Function Plays a role in the maturation of phagosomes that engulf pathogens, such as S.aureus and Mycobacterium (By similarity). May be involved in melanosomal transport and docking. Involved in the proper sorting of TYRP1. {ECO:0000250}.
Subcellular Localization Cell membrane {ECO:0000305}; Lipid-anchor {ECO:0000305}; Cytoplasmic side {ECO:0000305}. Melanosome {ECO:0000250}. Cytoplasmic vesicle, phagosome membrane {ECO:0000250}; Lipid-anchor {ECO:0000250}; Cytoplasmic side {ECO:0000250}. Note=Recruited to phagosomes containing S.aureus or Mycobacterium. {ECO:0000250}.
Disease Associations Note=Defects in Rab38 are the cause of a form of oculocutaneous albinism known as the chocolate (cht) phenotype. Mice exhibit a brown coat similar in color to mice with a mutation in tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TYRP1). The targeting of TYRP1 protein to the melanosome is impaired in Rab38(cht)/Rab38(cht) melanocytes.
