Summary
InnateDB Protein IDBP-74656.6
Last Modified 2014-10-13 [Report errors or provide feedback]
Gene Symbol BPI
Protein Name bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein
Synonyms BPIFD1; rBPI;
Species Homo sapiens
Ensembl Protein ENSP00000262865
InnateDB Gene IDBG-74654 (BPI)
Protein Structure
UniProt Annotation
Function The cytotoxic action of BPI is limited to many species of Gram-negative bacteria; this specificity may be explained by a strong affinity of the very basic N-terminal half for the negatively charged lipopolysaccharides that are unique to the Gram-negative bacterial outer envelope. Has antibacterial activity against the Gram-nagative bacterium P.aeruginosa, this activity is inhibited by LPS from P.aeruginosa. {ECO:0000269PubMed:1937776, ECO:0000269PubMed:2722846}.
Subcellular Localization Secreted. Cytoplasmic granule membrane. Note=Membrane-associated in polymorphonuclear Leukocytes (PMN) granules.
Disease Associations
Tissue Specificity Restricted to cells of the myeloid series.
