FCN2, as well as ficolins FCN1 and FCN3, in serum are associated with MBL-associated serine protease (MASP) to form a complex and this complex binds to carbohydrates present on the surface of a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria through ficolin, initiating complement activation via the lectin pathway.

This family is characterized by the presence of a leader peptide, a short N-terminal segment, followed by a collagen-like region, and a C-terminal fibrinogen-like domain. This gene is predominantly expressed in the liver, and has been shown to have carbohydrate binding and opsonic activities.
