Protein Structure
UniProt Annotation
Function Calcium-activated chloride channel (CaCC) which plays an important role in transepithelial anion transport and smooth muscle contraction. Required for the normal functioning of the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) which generate electrical pacemaker activity in gastrointestinal smooth muscles. Acts as a major contributor to basal and stimulated chloride conductance in airway epithelial cells and plays an important role in tracheal cartilage development. {ECO:0000269PubMed:18585372, ECO:0000269PubMed:18724360, ECO:0000269PubMed:21908539, ECO:0000269PubMed:22002868, ECO:0000269PubMed:22075693}.
Subcellular Localization Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Cytoplasm {ECO:0000250}.
Disease Associations
Tissue Specificity Highly expressed in pulmonary bronchiole epithelial cells, pancreatic and submandibular gland acinar cells, kidney proximal tubule, all retinal cell layers, most sensory cells of dorsal root ganglia, Leydig cells and spermatocytes (at protein level). Expressed at high levels in the thyroid gland and gastrointestinal muscles. {ECO:0000269PubMed:18585372, ECO:0000269PubMed:18724360, ECO:0000269PubMed:20056604}.
