Gene Symbol UGT2A1
Protein Name UDP glucuronosyltransferase 2 family, polypeptide A1, complex locus
Synonyms
Species Homo sapiens
Ensembl Protein ENSP00000424478
InnateDB Gene IDBG-21898 (UGT2A1)
Protein Structure
UniProt Annotation
Function UDP-glucuronosyltransferases catalyze phase II biotransformation reactions in which lipophilic substrates are conjugated with glucuronic acid to increase water solubility and enhance excretion. They are of major importance in the conjugation and subsequent elimination of potentially toxic xenobiotics and endogenous compounds. Active on odorants and seems to be involved in olfaction; it could help clear lipophilic odorant molecules from the sensory epithelium. {ECO:0000269PubMed:19858781}.
Subcellular Localization Membrane {ECO:0000305}; Single-pass type I membrane protein {ECO:0000305}.
Disease Associations
Tissue Specificity Olfactory epithelium and brain. Isoform 2 is mainly expressed in the nasal mucosa. {ECO:0000269PubMed:10359671, ECO:0000269PubMed:19858781}.
