Summary
[Homo sapiens] MX1 is an interferon-induced member of the dynamin superfamily of large GTPases, which inhibit a wide range of viruses by blocking an early stage of the replication cycle.
[Homo sapiens] MX1 GTPase is a key mediator of cell-autonomous innate immunity against a broad range of viruses such as influenza and bunyaviruses.
[Homo sapiens] MX1 expression is upregulated by alpha-defensins in gigival epithelial cell.
[Homo sapiens] Antiviral specificity of MX1 against orthomyxoviruses (influenza A and Thogoto viruses) is determined by a few critical amino acids in the disordered loop L4 of MX1.
[Homo sapiens] NRAV, a long noncoding RNA, modulates antiviral responses by negatively regulating the initial transcription of multiple critical interferon-stimulated genes, including IFITM3 and MX1, by affecting their histone modification.
[Homo sapiens] MX1 prevents influenza A virus (IAV) replication by disassembling into dimers and binding to IAV nucleoprotein synthesized following primary transcription.
Entrez Gene
Summary This gene encodes a member of the Mx protein family of large GTPases, and functions in the innate immunity system. Interferon alpha/beta treatment or viral infection induces expression of this protein, which subsequently accumulates in the cytoplasm and inhibits viral replication. It has been shown to confer resistance to vesicular stomatitis virus, a member of the rhabdovirus family, but not to influenza virus. This gene produces a functional protein in some feral mouse strains, whereas some inbred mouse strains including the strain of the reference genome, C57BL/6J, contain a frameshift that inactivates this gene product.
